Giel Marais

Giel is a mining automation technology and systems engineering specialist with more than 40 years experience in the industry, starting and concluding his career at De Beers Consolidated Mines but had a couple of detours in between. 

During his career he covered the customer, supplier and consulting domains and the application of technologies to advance modern underground mining to the next level of cost effectiveness through the integration of advanced digital, automation and information systems across underground mining operations.

He led major automation and digital-mining initiatives for De Beers, Anglo Platinum, and Sandvik, and now advises global mining companies and OEMs on systems integration, operational readiness and the deployment of next-generation mining technologies.

His objective is to bring together business processes, information, data, software applications, mining machines and other technology in an integrated way to unlock the full value of the mineral resources to its disposal, and the knowledge potential embedded within the organization’s systems and employees.

Post Graduate Diploma in Information Systems Management, 2005
